FAQ for the Teacher:

My child loves to draw, but how will his work be graded compared to another student's work?
No two students will create art the same way. Work will be graded on a very individual basis. I prefer to use a Rubric and if the student has engaged each part of the rubric, there should not be many questions as to grading. Of course if there are, please see me or contact me and we will discuss privately any concerns.

Is my child going to just sit and draw for an hour?
No, but that would not necessarily be a bad idea. There are terms and vocabulary that I will have the students become familiar with. Part of having an excellent eye for art is the study of famous artists. Having a knowledge of an artists can encourage students to see that not all artists think or see the world with the same vision.

What does art have to do with other core subjects?
As hard as it is to see today, artists of the past were the best mathmaticians. Art and Math go hand in hand and is very hard to seperate. There are times I may have the students read a poem I wrote and have them to put the words into a picture. I may show a piece of art and have the students write what the piece makes them feel or create a short story.

Will the parents have a chance to see the artwork?
One of my most exciting times in college was the showing in the gallery at the end of my senior year. Our classes will be showing our best pieces in a real gallery--Piedmont Arts--at the end of the year. During the course of the year, work will be displayed in our class gallery. Students are very proud of their work and I remind all viewers to keep comments to themselves, you never know who is listening and we don't want to crush a budding talent.
How many years have you taught art?
This is my first years as an art teacher. I finished the Career Switcher Program and have taken an indepth arrangement of classes to prepare me for my new career as a teacher. I feel as if I have been taught by the best of the best by teachers that cover every area of our state. This education enabled me to have a diverse faculty that no single college can offer. I am very excited to bring my experience from the "working world" to the classroom.
